TERRIFIC TOTTON EXTEND UNBEATEN RUN TO 11 GAMES AS THEY BREEZE PAST 10-MAN CHERTSEY TOWN
An electrifying start from The Stags saw Tony Lee have two great chances inside the first four minutes. His first effort was smartly tipped around the post by Chertsey goalkeeper Nicholas Jupp; his second headed just past the post.
Totton didn’t have to wait long to get rewarded for their dominant start. In the 16th minute, Tom Blair’s backheel to Charlie Austin allowed the latter to provide a cross from the byline, which captain Scott RENDELL met with a darting run to the near post to flick his shot into the far bottom corner.
A minute later, Austin thought he had doubled the hosts’ advantage but the offside flag denied the striker.
Eoin Casey received a red card in the 25th minute for bringing down Lee to deny a goal scoring opportunity.
With their numerical advantage, The Stags continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their lead just before the break. Lee was again involved as he was brought down in the box, leaving the referee no choice but to award a penalty. Scott RENDELL calmly slotted the ball into the net after a stuttered run-up.
Totton’s dominance continued into the second half as they terrorised the Chertsey defence. Austin had a brilliant chance to make it 3-0 in the 73rd minute when Jupp failed to collect the ball from a cross, but the striker took too long to get his shot off and was closed down.
Minutes later, Austin had the ball in the back of the net only to be denied a second time by the linesman. However, Austin finally got the goal he deserved two minutes before the end. It was a lovely team goal, culminating in substitute Luke Bennett firing a low driven cross to the back post where Charlie AUSTIN slid in to poke the ball into an empty net.
The Stags move up to second place in the Southern League Premier Division South table, just four points behind league leaders Merthyr Town with a game in-hand.
