AFC Totton AFC Totton Pitching In - Partners with Southern Football League

On Tuesday evening the Stags entertain Winchester City at the Snows Stadium (7.30pm) in what looks a very attractive local derby. Both sides have started the Southern League Div One (South) season well, with City starting their league campaign with two excellent wins, starting with a superb 2-1 win at Melksham Town. The Citizens then followed up that win with a thumping 5-1 home win over Mangotsfield United at the SimplyHealth City Ground.

Former Stags player Craig Davis has done an excellent job with City since becoming boss in early 2017. In his first full season in charge City finished 11th in Division One. They improved the following season, just missing out on the play offs, finishing 6th. Then last term 2019/20 City were in 4th place, prior to the abandonment of the campaign. The squad Davis has assembled for 2020/21 looks decent, and capable of mounting a serious challenge for the play offs/promotion.

Other than the two league games that the Citizens have won, they have also played three games in the FA Cup. In the Preliminary round City saw off Corsham Town 2-0 at home and in the 1st qualifying round they saw off Clevedon Town 3-2, also at home. City’s interest in the competition ended this weekend when they were knocked  out by a strong Bath City side from National League South. The 2nd qualifying round tie at Twerton Park finished 3-2 to Bath. The scoreline suggests that City made a real fist of it in the West Country.

The Stags and the Citizens, have met 12 times in the Southern League and interestingly the Stags record reads… Won 4 Drawn 4 and Lost 4! Goals for 14, Goals against 13.

The Stags go into Tuesdays game in fine fettle following their fantastic 5-0 win at Willand Rovers last Wednesday. Glenn Howes has himself put together a decent squad and that makes this game even more mouth watering for many. Supporters will have to wait and see if new signing Stephane Zuber will be involved, after the former Caen, AFC Bournemouth and Weymouth defender joined the Stags last friday.
