On Thursday evening at the Snows Stadium there is ‘An evening with Saints legend Francis Benali with Wayne Shaw as your compere. Listen to Fran talking about his career and his charitable exploits such as his three-week 1,000-mile (1,600 km) challenge running to all 20 Premier League grounds in August/September 2014, raising in excess of £100,000 for the charity Cancer Research UK.
In October 2016, Benali completed another amazing challenge, running and cycling to all 44 Premier League and Championship stadiums in 2 weeks. He ran a marathon and cycled 75 miles each day and in the process raising another £350,000 for Cancer Research UK. Following this, he was awarded the freedom of the city of Southampton.
In April 2019 Franny announced that he would race seven Ironmans in seven days, as part of his aim to raise £1million for Cancer Research UK. Despite being hospitalised, Fran completed five Ironmans, raising £1million.
Southampton born and bred, Franny played for Saints for his almost his entire professional career, making 311 appearances for the club between 1988 and 2001. Benali was a wholehearted player who never gave less than 100% and this made him a hero to the Saints fans, who loved his committed approach.
