AFTER A GRUELLING 42-GAME regular season, AFC Totton and Dorchester Town will clash for the fourth time this season when they meet in the Southern League Premier Division South Promotion Play-Off semi-final at the Snows Stadium on Wednesday 30 April 2025.

Last time out, The Stags romped to a 4-0 away win at the already relegated Frome Town in Somerset, with two goals from Ethan Taylor on his 202nd AFC Totton appearance, and one each from Tom Blair and Tony Lee.

DORCHESTER TOWN – THEIR SEASON SO FAR:
The Magpies made a slow start to the 2024/25 campaign, winning only one of their opening six games in all competitions, a run that included an early elimination from the Emirates FA Cup at the hands of Banbury United.

But, three consecutive wins going into September – which included a 3-2 home win over AFC Totton – injected some much-needed impetus into Tom Killick’s team, and although their run of 20 games without defeat between mid-November and early-March owed a lot to 13 draws, another impressive run of eight games without defeat – including six wins – see them come into this Promotion Play-Off semi-final in fine form.

It went down to the wire, though, with a Will Spetch goal four minutes into stoppage time at Hungerford Town on the last day of the regular season making all the difference, to see The Magpies fly over Havant & Waterlooville into fifth place, despite The Hawks beating Wimborne Town 2-0 at Westleigh Park.

Dorchester’s total of just 48 goals conceded is bettered only in the division by AFC Totton (35) and the Champions Merthyr Town (46), and the mid-March arrival of former Portsmouth and AFC Bournemouth striker Brett Pitman has added to attacking options that already boast 28-goal striker Olaf Konzsela and ex-Stags forward Shaquille Gwengwe.

STAGS vs MAGPIES – PREVIOUS MEETINGS THIS SEASON:

Dorchester Town 3-2 AFC Totton | SLPDS | Sat 14 Sep 2024
Tom Killick’s men inflicted AFC Totton’s first league defeat of the season at The Avenue, despite Charlie Austin’s first-half strike sending The Stags in ahead at half-time. Two goals in three minutes from Olaf Konzsela and one from former Sholing forward Wayne Robinson put The Magpies in the ascendency, and although Totton rallied and pulled one goal back through Scott Rendell five minutes into stoppage time, it proved too little, too late on the day.

The Stags took advantage of an early opportunity to get their own back when the two sides met at the Snows Stadiu, in the First Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy. Two former Magpies combined to score the only goal of the cup-tie, when winger Tom Blair crossed for striker Tony Lee to head home. An ugly altercation between Blair and Dorchester’s Shaq Gwengwe led to both players being given their marching orders, and although the visitors mounted a late onslaught on the Totton goal, Jimmy Ball’s team saw the job through to the end.

Sam Magri’s 11th-minute penalty put The Stags in front during the most recent meeting between these two sides, when Dorchester returned to the Snows Stadium for their Southern League Premier Division South visit in late March. On-loan striker Ben Seymour was tripped in the box by former AFC Totton midfielder Jordan Ngalo, and the former Maltese international centre-back stepped up to convert from the spot. But The Magpies levelled on the half-hour, when midfielder Wes Fogden stole into the Totton box to finish from Matthew Buse’s near-post cross. Substitute Brett Pitman thought he had snatched a late winner for the visitors, but an offside flag soon scuppered that idea.
