THE STAGS ARE GUNNING FOR THREE POINTS in the Southern League Premier Division South as they host Gosport Borough at the Snows Stadium in a Hampshire derby this Saturday (18 January 2025).
Last time out, Totton drew 1-1 at Merthyr Town. Ricardo Rees put the Welsh side in front in the 36th minute, but a thumping header from Joe Oastler levelled proceedings just before half-time and that’s how the game remained until full-time.
GOSPORT BOROUGH – THEIR SEASON SO FAR:
Despite a tricky start to the season, Gosport have improved their form recently and currently sit in 10th place on 32 points from 23 games.
Boro’ started the season with two losses, one at home to Frome Town (0-1) and the other away at Hungerford Town, where they got smashed 2-5.
Their next eight games came without a loss, which included league wins against Winchester City and Tiverton Town, two FA Cup victories against Andover New Street and Gloucester City – the latter after a replay – and draws with Sholing, Basingstoke Town and Merthyr Town. This streak came to an end at Wimborne Town when they lost 0-1 in the league.
The Emirates FA Cup run continued after they knocked out Oxford City, winning 3-2 at the home of The Hoops from the National League North. In the Third Qualifying Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy, they needed penalties to get past Poole Town. They were knocked out at the Fourth Round Qualifying stage of the FA Cup by Wealdstone, losing 1-4.
Gosport then started to demonstrate better league form throughout the next five games, winning against Swindon Supermarine, Taunton Town and Poole Town, as well as drawing with Walton & Hersham. Sandwiched amongst those five games, however, was a tricky home defeat to bottom-of-the-table club to Marlow – The Blues’ first win of the season.
After that loss to Marlow, Gosport went nine games unbeaten, winning twice in the FA Trophy against National League South opposition in Tonbridge and Worthing. They continued to climb the league table with four wins and three draws. Over Christmas, they lost twice to Havant & Waterlooville and Winchester City, but the turn of the New Year saw better results with a comfortable 4-1 win over Sholing, a 4-3 victory over Bracknell Town, and then a draw and a loss to Taunton Town in their last two matches in an effective double-header brought about by a rearranged trip to Somerset following a weather-enforced postponement earlier in the season.
