NEW FOREST MENCAP would like to say “thank you” to AFC Totton for offering us the opportunity today to provide match-goers with information about how we are supporting many people in the New Forest and the surrounding area to live their best lives and also for allowing us to hold a collection – please give generously!

New Forest Mencap will be represented today by our four volunteer collectors, Andrew Aitken, Paul Aitken, Jeff Franklin and Mark Wood. Jackie Lillywhite, Development, Information and Support, will also be on-hand to answer any questions about learning disability, the work of New Forest Mencap or how to get involved with our active organisation.

People who have learning disabilities are among the most marginalised in society. It can be much harder for someone with a learning disability to be in work, make and keep friendships, to be involved and for their voices to be heard.

New Forest Mencap provides opportunities to learn skills for increased independence (our Lifeskills programme); support to volunteer on a regular basis or to gain employment via our Springboard to Employment programme; make friends and take part in social activities (we run three social clubs); keep healthy via our a “Healthier Me” programme and a wide variety of short-term activities, from cycling to yoga; be involved in writing and performing songs at a local music event and to be heard, thanks to our Action Together group.

New Forest Mencap has to generate ALL its own income – we don’t receive any money from the government, the NHS or the local authority — nor do we sell our activities or support to people with a learning disability. We aim to provide our servies at no cost to the participant.

Last year, 166 different people with a learning disability attended one of our groups or activities.  We also provide support and information to parent/family carers – nearly 40 parent/family carers were supported by us on an ongoing basis to get the support and life that their loved family members are entitled to – something which sounds obvious and simple but can be stressful, drawn out and exhausting.

All of this costs time and money, and we do a lot on a little. More and more gaps in services and support for people with a learning disability appear as statutory services are reduced and things cost more. Any donation of your time or money will be gratefully received; you will be supporting men and women who want the same as you – to live their best lives.

New Forest Mencap is a registered charity, No.1038962. For further information, please contact Jackie on 07549 073784 or email [email protected]
