THE STAGS ARE BACK at home in the Southern League Premier Division South on Saturday afternoon, when we host Hungerford Town.
Let’s find out about our opponents…
THE BASICS
Hungerford Town Football Club is based in Hungerford, Berkshire. Affiliated to the Berks & Bucks Football Association, they are currently in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South and play their home games at Bulpit Lane.
HAVE THEY GENERALLY BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN THE LEAGUE?
A fifth-place finish in the Southern League Division One South & West in 2011/12 saw the club qualify for the Promotion Play-offs, in which they lost 1-2 to Poole Town in the Semi-Finals. The following season, they finished as Runners-Up, again qualifying for the play-offs; after beating Paulton Rovers 4-2 in the Semi-Final, they went on to defeat Merthyr Town 3-1 in the Final to secure promotion to the Southern League Premier Division.
The 2014/15 season saw Hungerford finish fourth in the Premier Division. In the subsequent Play-Offs, they lost 0-1 to Truro City in the Semi-Finals. However, after another fourth-place finish the following season, they defeated Hitchin Town 3-2 in the semi-finals before beating Leamington 2-1 in the Final, earning promotion to the National League South.
HOW DID THEY GET ON LAST SEASON?
The Crusaders finished bottom of the National League South in 2022/23, resulting in relegation to the Southern League Premier Division South. Despite winning 10 games and drawing 10 – amassing a total of 40 points – it wasn’t enough to keep them at Step 2.
HAVE AFC TOTTON PLAYED THEM RECENTLY?
The last meeting between the two clubs came in February 2014, when The Stags suffered a 1-3 home defeat. Ex-Stag Stefan Brown was on the scoresheet for Hungerford that day. However, in six league meetings between the sides, Totton come out on top with four victories to The Crusaders’ two.
The biggest victory for Totton came in 2011 when they thumped Hungerford 7-0. Mike Gosney scored four, Nathaniel Sherborne hit two and Lee Brown scored the other for The Stags.
DO WE HAVE CURRENT OR FORMER PLAYERS IN COMMON?
Alfy Whittingham (pictured below), the son of former Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday striker Guy Whittingham, is a midfielder who was originally dual signed to The Stags in December 2016 before signing permanently the following summer. Following a brief stint with Totton, Alfy signed for Hungerford in 2018. Now 25 years-old, he joined National League South side Hampton & Richmond Borough from Aldershot Town in the summer of 2022.
Former Scottish youth international Jack Alexander can play in defence or midfield. Born in Oxford, he began his career with Liverpool’s U18s before switching from the Academy at Melwood to Bristol City. In 2015, he signed for Eastleigh and was soon dual-registered with AFC Totton. He went to Swindon Supermarine in 2016 and has since also represented Thatcham Town, Wantage Town and North Leigh. He signed for The Crusaders in the summer.
If you know of any others, please let us know.
WHO IS THEIR MANAGER NOW?
Danny Robinson. Former Thatcham Town manager Danny made the switch to Hungerford Town after five very successful years at Waterside Park. One of his proudest and most memorable moments at the club was winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 2018, and he also won the Hellenic League title and guided The Kingfishers to promotion to the Southern League Division One South. Robinson was on the verge of another promotion with Thatcham before the season was declared null and void in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He joined The Crusaders in early May.
WHEN AND WHERE IS THE GAME?
The match will take place at Snows Stadium, Salisbury Road, Totton SO40 2RW on Saturday 04 November 2023. Kick-off will be at 3:00pm.
