Central defender Joe Oastler joined AFC Totton from Vanarama National League South Havant & Waterlooville, to bolster Jimmy Ball’s defensive ranks.
The 33 year-old was born and raised in Portsmouth and was part of the Pompey Academy as a young child before being released when he was 17. He signed for Bognor Regis Town to retain fitness at the end of the 2007/08 season, before he moved to West London to sign for Queens Park Rangers.
During his three-year stint at Loftus Road, Joe was loaned out to the then administration-stricken Salisbury City before making 28 league appearances for Torquay United, who he helped to the League Two Promotion Play-Off Final against Steveange at Old Trafford, subsequently joining The Gulls on a permanent deal in June 2011 after being released by QPR - but not before making his Football League debut for manager Neil Warnock as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Watford at Loftus Road in April 2010.
Joe went on to make a further 85 league appearances as a regular fixture in the Torquay United back four for the next two seasons. His next port of call was Aldershot Town, where he racked up another 84 league games from 2013 to 2016, also contributing three goals.
He spent the 2016/17 season at Gosport Borough where he was a regular starter, before joining Oxford City for a four-year spell during which he stacked up 127 appearances and six goals.
He joined Havant & Waterlooville in May 2021, where he played alongside Sam Magri, Scott Rendell and Benny Read, going on to become a Player/Assistant Manager for The Hawks until the recent sacking of Jamie Collins as Manager meant Jimmy Ball could swoop to bolster The Stags’ defence in time for last weekend’s Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying tie at National League North outfit Gloucester City.
With Luke Hallett edging his way back from recent injury, Joe was thrust straight into the starting line-up for the cup tie at the TigerTurf Stadium. And he slotted into Totton’s back four seamlessly, not only contributing to the team’s clean sheet but also providing a headed assist for Scott Rendell’s opening goal midway through the first half.
A defensive organiser with the knack of winning plenty of aerial battles in the mould of ex-Chelsea and England defender John Terry. His first goal for AFC Totton came in the 2-2 draw at Walton & Hersham on New Year's Day 2024.
