AFC Stoneham.pngAFC STONEHAM WILL VISIT the Snows Stadium on Tuesday night attempting to become the first team to defeat AFC Totton in the Southampton Senior Cup for almost three years.

The Purples are going welll in the Wessex League Premier Division this season, currently sitting in 3rd place with 39 points from a possible 54. But, with the unbeaten AFC Portchester threatening to gallop out of sight at the top of the table, Stoneham are realistically competing for the runners-up spot alongside Horndean, Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Hamble Club.

The all-weather 3G pitch at the Stoneham Football Complex means that Stoneham don’t experience the December cold in quite the same way that most other clubs do. Brockenhurst were seen to with a 5-1 thrashing on Tuesday night, while Hythe & Dibden and Moneyfields both succumbed to 3-0 defeats in the two previous games. But a 2-3 defeat at Portchester on Saturday 03 December handed the advantage to the title-chasing Royals.

After receiving a bye through the First Round of this season’s Southampton Senior Cup, Stoneham navigated the Second Round with an emphatic 8-2 home win over Bishops Waltham, setting up an away trip to the competition’s current holders.

With the competition not being contested in the 2020/21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and The Stags’ success at St. Mary’s Stadium in May, Totton have not tasted defeat in the Southampton Senior Cup for a long time. And, with the Southern League Div.1 South match at Melksham Town having been called off due to frost last weekend, the cup tie will provide manager Jimmy Ball with an opportunity to keep several of his senior players match fit ahead of crucial local league encounters at home to Lymington Town and table-topping Sholing either side of the New Year.

The Stags won 4-0 at Ringwood Town in the Second Round at the end of September, with goals from Jake Adams, Ethan Taylor (2) and Scott Rendell.
